Rousing retelling of legend upon which Shakespeare's Hamlet is based: The First Nine Books of the Danish History of Saxo Grammaticus, actually books 3 and 4 or, to be more concise, pitt/~dash/amlethml. Treece has rendered this in more or less modern English, in the style of a Norse Saga / the grimmest and most gruesome of the unexpurgated Grimm's Kinder- und Hausmärchen, with elements of King of the Wood=Green Man fertility rites and garbled elements of Greek mythology. I used the German title [...]

Found this in the university library shelved just a little under Tolkien. Turns out it's a dark sort of historical novel based on Saxo Grammaticus's Deeds of the Danes, in particular the episode which Hamlet is also based on. I haven't read any Saxo Grammaticus, so it's hard to tell how authentic this is. I'd guess the obsession with fertility myths and penis symbols comes from Treece. This was a really cool historical fantasy book written in the 1960s. It's efficiently written, has good character development and incorporates a lot of different themes from mythology/classic literature. In the review I made after the FIRST time I read this book, I said it has some elements "borrowed" from Hamlet. I think it's actually more accurate to say that the book borrows from the same legend that Hamlet itself was based on.

There is something rotten in Sixth Century Jutland, where prince Amleth cannot make up his mind how to deal with the murderers of his father. This terrific novel guest-stars a rough and ready Arthur of Britain, a brutal and sneering warlord, ineffective against the Saxon invaders, as well as a shrewd but untrustworthy Beowulf, both a far cry from their heroic stereotypes. A superb novel in every way - a cynical, darkly comic and violent tour-de-force.
